Genetically engineered or modified organisms (GMOs) are controversial because of the limited research that is unable to give conclusive data on the long-term effects they may have on children or adults. Uses of genetically engineered foods are increasing at a fast rate with the conventional industrial farms and are more readily available in some markets than their non-modified counterparts. Some research points out those genetically engineered foods may be less nutritious than their natural forefathers. There is also concern that genetically modified foods may increase the risk for allergies and food sensitivities. For this reason, some organic baby food companies began out of a motivation to provide parents with a more convenient alternative.
